Out Of The Box

Category: Home Pools & Spas, International, Swimming Pools | Comment (0)

ABOVE: With its patented layered construction method, Biodesign is set to take outdoor pool design out of the box.

Think home swimming pools and immediately your mind conjures up images of light blue rectangular shaped boxes in the gardens of Middle England.

Previously indoor pools, rather than outdoor pools, have offered up more potential to express artistic design.

Set to challenge that concept, Biodesign Pools, by API Italia, is currently building up a network of approved UK installers with a goal to take swimming pool design into another dimension.

Pool Safety Concerns: ‘Over The Top’

Category: Home Pools & Spas, Swimming Pools | Comment (0)

A Jersey pool company has hit back following safety concerns about home pools on the island.

According to a BBC report, people in Jersey are being warned of the dangers of swimming pools by Child Accident Prevention Jersey (CAPJ). The Home Swimming Pool Safety Code aims to raise awareness of how pool owners can prevent drownings.

Louise Hamilton, CAPJ co-ordinator, was quoted as saying that with approximately 1,000 home pools on the island, every year children attend Jersey’s Emergency Department because of a neardrowning incident. “Every year children attend Jersey’s Emergency Department because of a near-drowning incident,” she said.

“Water is very enticing to young children and pool covers are an additional hazard – children trying to walk on a cover can fall under them and cause a delayed rescue because the child cannot be seen.”

Gary Hotton of Florida Pools & Spas said his company is not aware of any serious incidents involving child drownings despite many years of business. He says they sell a number of alarm systems and estimates about 90% of pools have safety covers.

“This all seems a bit daft when you consider we live on a small island of nine miles by five miles that is surrounded on all sides by the sea. Surely the sea poses a much greater risk than swimming in a pool,” says Gary.

“While we would never want people to be complacent, I think most home pool owners are vigilant and this warning is completely over the top.”

Best of Both Worlds

ABOVE: The Santella Swimgym is made from very substantial laminated engineered beams and a stainless steel strengthening harness.

Timberline continues its expansion into the residential home pool and spa market with the launch of a dedicated new company, Santella Leisure Products Ltd.

Leading with its above ground exercise pools, Santella will continue to develop strong trade links across multiple retail lines while building brand recognition in its own right.

“The last few years have seen an upsurge in the demand for both the above ground wooden pool and the Swim Spa,” says Tony Fearnehough, of Santella and Timberline.

“We believe the Swimgym combines the best of both worlds.” The Swimgym, which can be installed just as comfortably indoors or outdoors, is made from substantial laminated engineered beams and a stainless steel strengthening harness. It is designed to offer ‘something for everybody’ from the toddler to the senior citizen.

Made from good looking timber, the Swimgym in its smallest version has a water length of 2.95m, and in its largest version, a water length of 7.45m.

A Pool With Panache

Category: Home Pools & Spas | Comment (0)

ABOVE: The Dolphin Sport from Certikin with a Fast Lane countercurrent offered the perfect solution for a fitness swimmer and his family.

This Panache Pools customer was a regular fitness swimmer and had always wanted the convenience of a pool at home where the whole family would be encouraged to benefit from such an adaptable fitness facility with the additional benefits of fun and relaxation. With a limited amount of space to work with Panache felt the Dolphin Sport from Certikin fitted the bill perfectly.

The Panache schedule was ten days from dig to enclosure completion. However, on excavation we came across three 10,000 volt cables running across the dig which had not shown up on pre-dig checks or any deed plan and this set the project back several days, otherwise all went to plan.

Panache say the customer loves the quality of the pool and ease of assembly as well as the Fast Lane counter current which is such a powerful unit with all the required variations and facilities.

Summer Season Boost

Category: Home Pools & Spas | Comment (0)

With the economic squeeze encouraging more people than ever to holiday at home this year, ‘staycationers’ look set to give the above ground pool sector a timely boost.

Dependent as ever on a prolonged spell of good weather, this sector can be as precarious as the good ‘ol’ British climate to forecast.

“The market has been flat for three years now but we saw some growth in 2010 and now we are taking advantage and stimulating this even more by introducing new products and new literature,” reports Ian Pratt Regional Director for SCP UK.

“Certain products are and always will be impulse buy items that are bought due to hot sunny days or weekends.

“Our advice would be to have the stock available as impulse buying is very hard to predict and that type of buyer will move on if retailers have no stock – this includes accessories and games and inflatables,” he adds.

Both the Internet and High Street tend to sell more of the ‘soft–sided’ pool types that have a lower value and are much easier to put together as a self-assembly product. Family pools are available on the Internet but these do require a much higher degree of skill to assemble and that’s where a ‘hand’s-on’ local dealer approach will score over on-line price appeal.

The Biggest Selection Of Hot Tubs Under One Roof

Category: Home Pools & Spas, Hot Tubs & Spas | Comment (0)

Hydropool Hot Tubs is sponsoring the Ideal Gardens section of this year's Ideal Home Show

SPONSORS of the ‘ideal gardens section’ at this year’s landmark consumer event, Hydropool Hot Tubs will create an Oasis of Outdoor Living at this year’s Ideal Home Show from March 11 to March 27 inclusive at London’s Earls Court.

With the largest range of home hot tubs and swim spas ever seen in one location, the Hydropool Hot Tubs team will provide the essential ingredients for turning even the most mundane garden into an outdoor haven for fitness, fun and relaxation.

To complete the outdoor living experience, the Hydropool team will have a host of ‘must have’ accessories for transforming the garden into an outdoor room including an outdoor kitchen, a range of gazebos and cabins and the UK premier of the world’s first fully automated hot tub cover.

Celebrating its 15th year as the UK’s top sellers of hot tubs, Hydropool offers the world’s only self-cleaning hot tubs and swim spas and already has an estimated 8,000 spas installed in British homes.

The Hydropool team will be offering a number of special offers including £1,000 worth of accessories free with every spa sold during the opening weekend of the show.

A team from Swim Expert, the UK’s leading swimming improvement service, will be putting on demonstrations, three times daily, in a fully working model of a swim spa – so much more than a swimming machine with its capacity for underwater gym equipment, aqua-aerobic work outs and ideal for rehabilitation.

Back To Nature

Category: Home Pools & Spas, Swimming Pools | Comment (0)

Woodhouse Natural Pools are the UK partners for Biotop, the first ecologically natural filtered swimming pool builders.

With the emphasis today on a more holistic lifestyle that incorporates organic food, alternative medicine, spring drinking water as well as physical exercise, then it makes sense to swim in natural water.

Many users of natural swimming pools say it is the harmony of a seamless blending of environments that is the major draw.

While you are separated from the plants, you still feel surrounded by them when you swim, which creates a very special kind of mood. It is a very natural oasis.

The positive attitude to natural bathing and swimming as well as the health giving properties of water, sunshine and gentle breezes on the human body, should be embraced.

The original concept of natural swimming was developed in Austria but it was not until 1985 that the idea was commercially developed by an Austrian based company, called Biotop. The founder, Peter Petrich, conceived the idea of a self-cleaning biosystem for swimming ponds. Other companies such as Bioteich of Switzerland and Bionova of Germany soon followed.

Dare To DIY

Category: Home Pools & Spas | Comment (0)

One piece pools like this Riviera example are growing in popularity with self builders because they are generally supplied with pre-plumbed pipe work.

If you have always dreamed of having the luxury and convenience of your own back garden swimming pool, but felt it was out of your price range, then there has never been a better time to consider a self-build option.

They say, if you can build a fence, you can build a swimming pool. Personally, I would find either rather daunting. But the great thing about pool building is that you are never totally on your own.

There is plenty of incentive with the average back garden outdoor pool coming in around the £25,000 mark – you could easily halve the price tag by taking on some or all of the project yourselves.

Outdoor Living

This lucky home owner in the North West of England wanted a family pool at the bottom of this back garden that would be ideal for hosting parties and barbecues.

The team from Portrait Pools delivered with this £90,000 project that took about six months to complete from start to finish.

The reinforced concrete pool was finished with diamond brite to give the best effects at the most economic price. As well as the pool, Portrait provided a five-person spa, fully tiled to match the main pool.

Safety was a prime consideration so Portrait installed an Ocea automatic slatted pool cover system housed in a back wall niche system.

So pleased is the client that he is already talking to the Portrait Pools team about embellishing the project in the near future.

Moving Heaven And Earth

The owners of this award winning pool achieved their dream of owning a pool that resembled a mountain water hole.

The owners of this natural-looking pool wanted to feel as if they were swimming in a mountain water hole rather than a traditional pool.

Winners of an International Awards of Excellence gold medal in the category for best use of natural material on a pool, the team from California’s Spring Creek Pool and Spa Inc., moved heaven and earth, well,200 tons of natural granite boulders, to achieve the client’s dream.

A large, 12’ deep area in the centre of the pool is surrounded by stone shelves, boulder out ‘croppings’ and sanded pebble benches which swimmers discover as they explore the pool.

Rather than a typical shallow to deep end pool the swimming hole design features a 30’ long beach style entry with a stone surface that is reminiscent of a stream bank.

For those who wish to just get their feet wet the entry area boasts large scale boulder formations positioned so one can lounge pool and spa side while the more adventurous types leap from 10,000 pound boulders which cantilever seven feet over the swimming hole.

The US and global water leisure markets have been shocked and saddened to hear of the death of HWP’s David Brown at the age of just 49. David, who had just taken a new role on the HWP Board, did not recover from injuries sustained from a fall.www.hwpinc.com

“I hope that you have the same chance in your life that I have had mine – I could not have picked a better friend and partner if I made the mould myself,” said Art Kessinger, President of HWP, the wholesale distributor for spa and hot tub parts and accessories.

Leading the many tributes, Art added: “We were opposites in so many ways – but for over a quarter century we built this tent called HWP – this was and will continue to be the fabric our relationship – he touched every part of my life and my family and business.”

Service Charities ‘Splash Out’

Category: Home Pools & Spas, Hot Tubs & Spas, News, Pool & Spa Business News | Comment (0)

Held here by carer, Jennifer Barre, Rowan enjoys a dip in his new Jacuzzi spa at home with big brother Lewis.

Until recently, four-year-old Rowan Reardon could only access
hydrotherapy on a very limited basis at Severndale Special School
in Shrewsbury and on his visits to Hope House Children’s Hospice in
Oswestry.
Rowan was born prematurely and suffered severe brain damage.
He now suffers from cerebral palsy in all four limbs and severe
developmental problems. He also has epilepsy and is visually impaired.
He is not able to move by himself, and is completely reliant on his
family and carers.
But now Rowan and his family can enjoy a dip in his new Jacuzzi
spa, supplied by Oyster Pool and Leisure, of Raglan, Usk.
Rowan’s Dad, Paul, is a serving soldier in the Royal Logistic Corps
(RLC). He is based in Shrewsbury, and the family live in Service
quarters at Shawbury.
SSAFA Forces (Help Shropshire) helped and supported the family
to approach three military charities, who provided the funding for
the hot tub and gazebo for Rowan at his home in Shawbury. Paul’s
own Corps Benevolent Fund, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, and The Royal
British Legion all contributed to the cost of providing and installing
the spa and a gazebo.
Rowan loves being in his new spa. Hydrotherapy helps to reduce
pain, increases ranges of movement and muscle strength, and gives
a ‘feel good’ factor. For children with complex disabilities such as
Rowan’s, music and special lighting effects on the spa add multisensory
stimulation.

Wessex Pool Brothers Lead Way For Safety Coping

Category: Home Pools & Spas, Swimming Pools | Comment (0)

Above: Proven to withstand the rigorous environments of swimming pools both inside and out, the Global Resin safety coping is a safer option for residential and commercial pool surrounds.

WESSEX pool builders Phil and Ken Fernandez of Pool World, Wiltshire, have become one of the first companies in the world to install the new style of soft safety coping from Global Resins.
The lightweight, soft but immensely strong coping has been installed on a residential pool but is attracting strong interest in both residential and commercial markets.
“The first pool to be fitted with the safety coping is heavily used by children and the owners are already commenting on how much more pleasant it is for the youngsters getting in and out of the pool – let alone so much safer when they are in it,” says Phil.
“As an added bonus the customer chose a coping in a blue luminescent finish and it looks absolutely stunning after dark.”
“With more than 36 years in the industry, it is exciting to be part of something which is genuinely an innovative new product for the market,” says Phil.
