Believed to boast the largest hydrotherapy circuit in the world, the Chairama wellness centre, in Bogota, Colombia was created in collaboration with AstralPool. Its 2,000 m2 devoted to health and wellness is spread over four floors.
The spa’s central area comprises a water area made up of a swimming pool with relaxing effects such as cascades, swanneck jets, hydro-massage beds and jets.
Following on from the pool area there is a hot tub and a cold tub, which are ideal for a contrast in temperatures.
Other facilities include a ‘floatarium’ in which to experience the soothing, anti-stress effects of zero gravity and a hot-cold footbath.
Surrounding the water area is the temperature area, which includes heat fixtures, a sauna, steam bath and Roman bath, as well as a cold grotto with an ice fountain.
The relaxation area, located next to the central water area, comprises loungers and a ‘liquid’ recovery area where various herbal teas and cleansing tonics can be enjoyed.
This is also the space in which the treatment area is found, where users go through to the last stage of the circuit in the various massage booths and the Vichy shower.
In addition to designing the spa circuit and its components, AstralPool’s wellness division devised three hydrotherapy circuits for the Chairama spa in which the therapeutic properties of each element were taken into account.

DESIGNED and installed by the awardwinning Portrait Pools team, the swimming pool at the Heavenly Spa, in central London, not only provides a popular amenity for visitors to the ‘boutique’ venue but also acts as valuable marketing tool.
Partially visible from the busy street, only 100 yards from Paddington station, the spa operators deliberately keep the lights of the basement pool on 24 hours a day to attract the curiosity of passers-by.
The attractive pool also features heavily on the company’s website and helps encourage bookings.
“We wanted a significant water feature and looked at various decorative mini pools and tanks,” says Richard Armstrong, Heavenly Spa’s proprietor.
“The purpose of the feature was to make us special and create an atmosphere of luxury as well as wellbeing.
“A small but powerful exercise pool was screaming to be included but fancy design options were disproportionately expensive.
“We met Portrait pools at the Spatex Exhibition in February last year,” Richard recalls. “We chose them over the other suppliers because of their approach.
“Their concrete spraying expert was at the show and was most impressive. The consultant was sympathetic to our project and their prices were reasonable. They listened to what we wanted and helped us create a pool we are truly pleased with.”
“The pool is available whenever we are open,” says Richard. “The outside is cleaned daily and the chemical levels checked every 2-4 days depending on the pool’s use. In line with our green beliefs, we use ultraviolet purification as the main method of keeping the pool hygienic with minimum levels of chlorine only.”
At a total of some 2500 square feet, Heavenly Spa has to be selective in its menu but still manages to provide a comprehensive range of treatments, both on the ‘wellbeing’ and ‘beauty’ sides of the business. Richard again: “The size of our facility is small compared with most. We want to keep it select and have planned a maximum gym membership of only 100. It is certainly towards the ‘boutique’ end of the market. Most of our visitors say they never knew anything like this existed.
“With the counter current options on the pools we like to think we have the smallest pool in London to come up to Olympic standard training.”
