Refurbishment and renovation is the throbbing heartbeat for the residential UK swimming pool sector. A mainstay for most, refurbishing pools continues to contribute a huge slice of swimming pool contracting business.
Upgrades will initially focus attention on design. Out with the dolphins and in with a modern, sophisticated aquascape of colours enhanced by advanced lighting options. Typical fix-lists may include new liners and covers but will be underlined by more cost-efficient products from varispeed pumps to improved insulation and heat pumps.
Eco-friendly options for reducing chlorine and being kinder to swimmers and the environment will dominate product specification choice. Here we bring you six of the outstanding residential refurbishment projects from last year’s UK Pool & Spa Awards.
POOL TRANSFORMATION
This modern design refurbishment was undertaken to the dull and dated leaking pool. Following visits with the client to two of our previous new build projects, the designs were then amalgamated and tailored for the new client.
The brief was to look slick, modern and sophisticated; this was achieved by accenting the pool tiling with the quartz panels and subtle lighting. The project involved excavation works to the shell to incorporate two main drains, new shell fittings, and excavation of the surround for new pipework.
Removal of the dated statue niches was an absolute must. Following this, the walls were prepared to accommodate sectional tiled panels and wall down lights. The pool was finished with Arlanzon classic glass mosaic and silver grout. Stainless steel shell fittings and light shroud completed the design.
The feature-tiled wall panels in natural split face black quartz, silver grey wall tiles and plank grey wood effect over-lip nosing achieved the distinctive stylish design. Slick black air vents and black internal door completed the design.
The plant equipment was also up graded to improve the circulation, filtration and sanitisation. 24” Atika Filter. 3/4HP Aquaspeed pump. Quantum UV Rainbow chlorine feeder. Stainless steel Certikin faceplates. Colour change LED light. The clients absolutely loved the transformation by Progressive which surpassed their expectations and the new look pool is now in daily use.

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN
Wyre Hall become one of the most viewed properties in the UK when it went up for sale in 2021. Its new owners approached Topline Pools and Wellness to refurbish the indoor swimming pool and spa and provide a luxurious and practical contemporary design to replace an existing out-dated shell.
The refurbishment included new pool side surround tiles, new ducting round the pool hall, replacement filters and pumps, new cover pit, automatic hidden pool cover and air handling system. The original pool had a surface mounted pool cover, but the client requested a hidden automatic slatted safety pool cover.
To do this, Topline had to shorten the pool slightly and build a wall within the pool shell to create a new cover pit. They also had to remove the existing acrylic spa and opening up the floor so they could install a new, larger tiled spa. Topline chose its own energy-saving LED underwater swimming pool lights.
As the UK’s largest manufacturer of swimming pool water chemistry controllers, Topline opted for its own TEC4000. The team opted for a Calorex air-handling unit, a Certikin pool filtration system –with an Astral top mounted multiport filter, Fairlocks for the automatic pool cover and Design Works Tiles for the finishing touches.

ALL-YEAR-ROUND SWIMMING
Starting as an outdoor feature, The Origin Pools team brought this outstanding renovation indoors for a full transformation of a swimming and social space that can now be used all year round. Designed sympathetically with the significant architectural character of the main house, the new structure perfectly complements its home and surrounding gardens.
Investing in improved energy efficiency, the Origin Pools team chose Heatstar XFEC 3000 Super plus with underfloor ducting for the environmental control adding a Coverstar Automatic safety cover installed in dry pit. Other technical specifications included Sta-Rite heating, Triogen Ozone System S2 and a Rainbow 320c manual inline feeder.

MEASURING-UP
When new owners moved into a beautiful Manor House they called Falcon Pools for expert professional help in bring the existing pool back to life. As an overall ambition, the owners wanted a more modernised look but for the overall design to be in keeping with the traditional surroundings.
Looking very old and tired, the renovation work entailed having to identify and fix a concerning leak. Measuring 11m x 5.5m with water depths of 1m – 1.6m (17,000 gallons), the pool was made shallower to allow for two sumps. The broken steps and lights were replaced along with a host of new Certikin fittings.
All pipework from pool to plant room was upgraded with new plant equipment including a Superpool filter with AFM glass filter media, a Speck Badu pump, a Blue Lagoon ultra violet automatic purification unit and a chlorine tablet feeder. Finishing touches included a Calorex air source heat pump, a Polaris auto cleaner and just for good measure, a Binder Hydrostar counter current swimjet.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL
This project is a complete swimming pool refurbishment project completed by David Burchett and his small Beyond Swimming Pools team in Ruxley, Kent. They completely changed the look of an out dated fibreglass swimming pool.
To add to the challenge, the pool had a fibreglass finish which had been painted over the years and was peeling off and beginning to block up the filter. The Beyond team set about delivering a sleek contemporary design by converting it into a liner pool.
They changed all fixtures and fittings to Certikin liner fittings and also added an automatic top-up with LED colour changing light to the pool shell. This pool was then finished with an on-site welded liner in Prestige Renolit Alkoplan touch range. With outstanding attention to detail, the bespoke bullnose copping stones are made from black limestone and then sealed.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Providing quality leisure products and services for over two decades CSPAS is a family-run business based in High Legh, Knutsford, Cheshire. The team took on the indoor refurbishment of a pool hall, 8×4 meter concrete tiled pool and all associated plant including the installation of new spa pool and sauna.
Extensive preparation work was required to facilitate works on a project that demanded the highest specification. The completed works included the installation of a new spa pool, a new pool with EVA counter swim system and integrated EVA lighting.
Upgrades included a Heatstar air management system, advanced DAISI filtration system on both pool and spa with automatic fresh water fill and skimmer isolation. Finishing touches included the installation of a Tylo sauna with Taika panelling and elder benching.
