Family Matters

Celebrating its tenth birthday this year, the company is a real family affair with David’s wife, Heather, son Ryan and son-in-law Dean all now on board.
Much like the components of the products that they sell, each and every member of the North Spas team has an important role to play in the keeping the business running smoothly.
“Just like a hot tub all the parts are vital for optimal functionality,” reveals Director David Mason. “Our groundsmen compare to water features, LED lights and music systems all of the things which add the ‘wow’ factor to a spa.
The intricate decking works our groundsmen create also add the ‘wow’ factor to the job. “Our team of electricians are comparable to the pumps in a hot tub; they both provide the power,” he adds. “Our team of office staff could be likened to a hot tubs control panel because everyone would be useless without them just like a control-less hot tub.
“Any water purification treatments such as Ozone work hard to maintain a hot tub just like our fantastic team of servicing technicians. “And finally, myself and Heather the directors keep everything ticking over – just like a heater,” he adds.
The company was formed in 2006 when David suffered a back injury during military service and he recognised the importance and personal benefits of hydrotherapy.
It soon developed into a passion for the ex-Green Howards Sergeant Major and he decided to make hot tubs his full time occupation. North Spas first showroom opened in Dobbies Garden Centre, Birtley, which attracted visitors from across the North East.
Due to the high demand, a second showroom was established three years later in Ponteland, Northumberland. Celebrating its tenth birthday this year, the company is a real family affair with David’s wife, Heather, son Ryan and son-in law Dean all now on board.
Says David: “Surviving the recession was very difficult and is a great achievement for any business, especially when you are trying to sell luxury items which aren’t a necessity in some people’s lives. I am so pleased I have witnessed the company grow to where we are now celebrating ten years in business”.
North Spas are exclusive Artesian dealers and have six ranges of spas to choose from. Their bestselling range last year was the Special Edition middle budget spas, which accounted for 53 per cent of overall sales.

North Spas has a number of awards under its belt, including picking up a Silver award at the UK Pool & Spa Awards last year.

“We are proud to be exclusive dealers of Artesian Spas and truly believe and trust the brand we sell,” comments David. “Even though we repeatedly sell the same spas, we still believe it is important to offer our customers a diverse range.
Each customer has different requirements, whether this be features or size and by having such a wide range we believe we can cater for the mass market of potential buyers.” The company offers its customers the full package from base to bubbles.
Among its many projects, the team is currently in the design stages of a project involving a round South Seas 627M. The plan is to position the spa and begin a curved decked build around the spa using Trexx composite decking. Since the introduction of finance packages, the business has established a wider customer base.
In 2015, 44 per cent of North Spas’ customers took advantage of 0% free finance with the majority paying £1,000 or less deposit over a three year term. David adds: “We have noticed a much larger proportion of our clients are still in the nesting life stage with at least one child at home.
“Our pre-owned spas accounted for nine per cent of overall sales last year, whilst this is a relatively low figure, this range is vital to access an audience with a lower budget.” With a number of awards already under its belt including the 2014 Artesian Dealer of the Year accolade, the North Spas team has its sights firmly set on continued growth and sustained success.
David comments: “We would love to properly break through into the swim spa market, especially as swim spas seem to be gaining more interest every year. We have already completed installations involving swim spas even though we have no room to display one in either of our two showrooms.”
He adds: “We are looking to open our third site which will be big enough to accommodate an Artesian TidalFit Swim Spa which we hope will generate lots of interest.”
