East London-based Apulia Pools took to the stage earlier this summer to help create a theatrical lake for a production at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London.
Owner George Thorpe was approached by the production manager of the show, ‘The Seagull’, for advice on constructing a replica lake on stage which would be used by the actors.
George explains: “The production manager had very specific requirements for the lake and a limited budget to do it on as the show ran for just three weeks. The breakdown and setup time between the end of the last production and the new stage setting was a matter of four days so, it was a tight schedule.”
Apulia Pools assisted with the design of the 10 x 3 x 0.5m lake and supplied the liner, along with a 12kw Evo electric heater, a 0.75 hp Astral pump and a Waterco cartridge filter. The pool itself was surrounded by wooden decking and sat directly below a large tilted mirror to allow the audience to see the action that took place within the pool. safety checks Apulia was responsible for the safety checks and regular upkeep and maintenance of the pool, as well as the setup and deconstruction.
George adds: “There were some last minute adjustments during the setup process and we were delayed somewhat by the construction of the mirror, but the stage was successfully completed on time and the show was a roaring success.”
Family-run Apulia Pools specialises in the online retail of above ground swimming pools, wooden pools, Intex spas, Villeroy and Boch spas as well as all other pool and spa equipment. Set up three years ago, the company now stocks over 4,000 items from leading manufacturers such as Certikin, Plastica, Pentair and Pleatco.
“We’re a small company which means we can be flexible with time schedules and competitive with prices,” says George.
“The Regent’s Park project was something totally different for us, but working closely with the production team to achieve the desired pool has added a new string to our bow and we were delighted to be able to help.”
