A national charity has highlighted the need for an increase of hydrotherapy pools, after it found that there are over double the number of pools available for animals than there are for people.

The report by Muscular Dystrophy UK revealed that there are at least 362 hydrotherapy pools solely for animals in the UK, compared to 179 pools for people with muscle-wasting conditions.

The charity is now calling on MPs to act and work with the Department of Health and the Department for Communities and Local Government to launch a review into the provision of hydrotherapy services.

Nic Bungay, Director of Campaigns, Care and Information, said:  “The Government must urgently review access to hydrotherapy, to uncover the full scale of the issue. We need local authorities and schools to play their part too, making their facilities more widely available to those in need.”
