Following a major refurbishment programme, completed earlier
this year by Loyal Grove Leisure, a new flume at the Oasis Leisure
Centre in Swindon, Wiltshire, features a black hole theme with a
section of daylight rings and thunder and lightning sound and
light effects.
Originally installed in the 1970’s, three flumes each
approximately one hundred metres long, starting from an 11m
high stair tower at the Lagoon Pool, were in need of an update.
The Loyal Grove brief was to replace one of the flumes and fully
refurbish the other two inside and out. A variety of features was
to be added to all three flumes to add interest and excitement.
One of the three flumes was completely removed along with
the associated steel work and in place a new, faster flume was
installed. The two remaining flumes were completely refurbished
inside and out which involved sanding down all surfaces, making
good any repairs and thoroughly cleaning the flumes to prepare
them ready for coating.
A specialist epoxy based lining system was then applied
in several layers to the internal surface of both flumes with
particular care to the riding surface and a similar system also
applied to the outside of the flumes.
All flume support steelwork both old and new was cleaned,
minor corrosion treated if necessary and then redecorated with a
good quality proprietary paint system.
The floor surface on the flume launch platform was stripped
off and the concrete sub-base suitably prepared with a smooth
finish and then coated with a slip-resistant, mutli-coloured epoxy
based floor lining.
Due to site restrictions and obstructions, powered access and
working platforms could not be used and therefore the entire
flume area was accessed by scaffold for the duration of the works
with numerous modifications required at different stages of the
project.
RIDER TIMES
All three flumes were fitted with new high speed detection sensor
LED traffic light control systems to assist staff operation and safe
usage.
Timer display systems with sound effects were fitted to two of
the flumes to record rider times and present them on LED display
boards in the splash pool area.
Ancillary works also completed by Loyal Grove included new
graphics to the flume entrances, internal LED lighting to two
flumes and new galvanised steel palisade security fencing around
the external perimeter of the entire site.
