When the doors open at the Coventry Building Society Arena, SPATEX visitors can expect a showcase of the latest products and innovations. But, thanks to the support of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers, and other industry associations, the event will also see one of the best educational seminar programmes ever presented.
Entering its 29th year, SPATEX prides itself on being the provider of the best free source of water leisure information and at the vanguard in promoting important research. SPATEX has long highlighted the dangers of legionella and cryptosporidium in water leisure environments and pledges to continue its quest to bring up-to-the-minute health, safety and compliance guidance to the forefront of visitors’ attention.
The SPATEX Foundation also played a vital role during the pandemic in its donation to the Water Babies Swim School to carry out valuable research into how chlorinated swimming pool water inactivates SARS-CoV-2. This year SPATEX is breaking new ground with a talk by Dr Ant Shepherd from Portsmouth University entitled Hot Tubs and People with Type 2 Diabetes – The Need for Industry Help – Arena 2, Wednesday 5th February (13.30-14.00).
As Associate Professor in Clinical Exercise Physiology, Ant’s research focuses on using novel interventions, such as hot tubs and saunas, to improve metabolic and cardiovascular health, quality of life and physical function. His talk will highlight how immersion in the hot water of a hot tub can help diabetics improve their glucose / insulin and cardiovascular health.
“There is a need to increase the evidence base to get this set up as a treatment within the NHS,” says Dr Shepherd. The exhibition’s impressive double seminar programme, including the ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) technical workshops, is an established cornerstone of SPATEX and runs on all three days of the show.
Attendance at the workshops is rewarded with a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) point and a Certificate of Attendance. New for this year, all the STA seminars in Arena 2 will now offer a half CPD point. Another is aimed at new initiative commercial pool operators.
The Pool Plant Theatre sees the Institute of Swimming (IOS), collaborating with the Swimming Teachers Association (STA), Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE), and Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) to offer a series of hands-on workshops, speaker panels, and a forum There will be four sessions on Tuesday (11.35-14.10) and four on Wednesday (10.15-13.00), covering essential topics such as operational procedure compliance, pool safety and advanced filtration.
SPATEX is all about networking not just at the show but at a variety of supportive social events. On Wednesday February 5th, from 5 pm, all visitors and exhibitors are warmly invited to the traditional after show celebration in the Arena’s Clubhouse for industry chat, free canapes and drinks, not forgetting a very collectible SPATEX gift.
