BEYOND THE BASICS

As autumn approaches, changing temperatures, weather conditions and pool usage can all influence water quality.

For pool and spa operators, maintaining a clear understanding of water chemistry remains essential throughout the changing seasons. While routine measurements such as chlorine and pH provide vital information, looking beyond the basics can give operators a more complete picture of their water and support informed management decisions.

The Lovibond® MD150 13in1 photometer has been designed with this broader approach in mind. Combining optical precision with extensive testing capability, it gives operators greater control over disinfection, water balance, safety, and asset protection within one compact, rugged instrument.

Its extensive range covers the familiar foundations of pool water testing including free, total, and combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, and bromine. It then goes further, with testing capabilities for aluminium, phosphate, sulphate, copper, iron, hydrogen peroxide, active oxygen and even a lower pH range to allow for flexibility with future trends.

This wider selection means operators can investigate more than the most immediate indicators of water quality. Rather than requiring multiple devices for a broader testing routine, the MD150 brings these measurements together in one unit.

Some of the additional parameters also address developing considerations within pool water management. The MD150 includes a lower pH range of 5.2-6.8. Operational pH levels have been trending lower than previously accepted, with indications that this could continue. Extending the measurement range therefore helps future-proof the instrument as testing standards and industry guidance evolves.

Phosphate is another valuable addition. Phosphates can encourage algae growth and as a result, levels should be kept as low as possible, ideally completely absent. Having phosphate measurement available alongside routine parameters allows operators to incorporate this additional consideration into their wider testing programme.

The ability to measure sulphate also has implications beyond the water itself. Sulphate levels in source water are increasing, while commonly used pool chemicals can contribute to further build-up. Sulphate can attack concrete structures, corrode metal fixtures, and degrade plastics, meaning regular monitoring can help protect infrastructure and support the long- term integrity of the pool.

Alongside its 13-parameter capability, the MD150 is designed to make comprehensive testing practical.

Advanced optical technology delivers fast, precise results, while the one- time-zero function reduces repetitive steps during a busy testing schedule. Its IP67 rating and rubber protected sides provide durability for demanding environments.

Results can also be transferred via NFC or USB-C to the AquaLX® app or Lovibond® Data Expert, while the instrument stores the last 100 readings with time and date stamps.

With 13 parameters in one handheld photometer, the MD150 enables operators to look beyond the basics and take a more complete approach to water quality management, now and into the future.
