Ian Smith, a founding staff member of NorCal, now SCP UK, when it began in 1966, passed away in May after a short illness. His contribution to the development of the UK pool industry will sadly, never be fully recognised, but it should not be underestimated.
Ian together with Bill Trusson, Billās son Bob and daughter Christine, established strong trading links with America as NorCal became the first established trade supply company for UK pool builders offering a whole range of previously ādifficult to sourceā products and equipment.
Ian was pivotal in helping secure the European distribution rights for the worldās first ever automatic pool cleaner – the Arneson Poolsweep. It was a major coup for the fledgling NorCal business and one which firmly set the company on the path to bigger and better things.
Working alongside Bill and Christine, Ian was instrumental in setting up NorCal offices and distribution centres in Italy, Germany and Majorca. When the time was right to move on, Ian established his own regional pool distribution and retail business. Pool Filtration was a stonesā throw from the dying embers and ashes of the original NorCal warehouse that had been razed to the ground in a devastating fire. Pool Filtration flourished and became much respected within the industry; a demonstration of Ianās undeniable talent as a businessman and entrepreneur.
Devoid of ego, Ian never sought the limelight, rather he just went about his business life adopting on the outside the persona of a tough, no-nonsense businessman whilst always being fair and reasonable.
Ian was a very special talent and one highly respected and liked by all who had the pleasure to work with him and for him.
