The Eric Morecambe Centre (EMC) in Harpenden is due to be fully operational later this month.
Named after the legendary comedian, who lived in Harpenden for many years, the EMC was rebuilt by owners St Albans City and District Council as part of a £20 million project which includes the creation of a new culture centre.
Dodging around Covid restrictions, the leisure centre actually opened for business in April and has built up a growing membership of almost 4,000 and more than 1,500 local children on the Swim School.
The new centre was officially opened by Olympic Gold Medal gymnast Max Whitlock alongside local dignitaries and badminton champ Gail Emms. The venue is a great asset for the town and surrounding villages as it boasts not only a 25-metre swimming pool but also a learner pool with a moving floor.
The EMC will be managed by 1Life that looks after 30 local authority venues nationwide, covering leisure centres, swimming pools, golf courses, and theatres. 1Life 1500 employee team service around 10 million customer visits per year.
