Biofilms are first believed to be in existence over 3.6 billion years ago but our understanding of the full impact these biofilms have on the water leisure industry is comparatively recent. Biofilms are found in filter media, cartridge filters, internal pipework, grouting, balance tanks, gulley’s, cover pits, pool cover, changing rooms – to name just a few.
The Biofilm Alliance estimate the global annual cost biofilms impact on industry is more than $5 trillion and that is even before adding the combined wet leisure industries. “Pathogens such as pseudomonas rely on biofilms for their very existence,” explains industry expert James Lee. “Destroying these harmful biofilms is vital for the wet leisure market. “The most successful education program on biofilms is employed by the dental industry; yes, that slimy film you brush and flush from your teeth, gums and mouth twice daily is a biofilm (plaque),” he adds.
James is heading up a specialist distribution outlet called Green Tech International and backing the introduction of a major new product to be marketed as Hydro Dioxide. The chlorine dioxide is the answer to biofilms in swimming pools, hot tubs and cold-water immersion systems.
