Around 40 delegates headed to the Ship Hotel, in Weybridge, Surrey, in the Autumn, for the latest ISPE Seminar. Tony Carter from EJ Bowman looked at Swimming Pool Heat Exchangers, including configuration, sizing, different heat sources, material suitability, installation consideration and maintenance.
John Harvey and Martin Killen from Recotherm spoke about Climate Control Systems in the Pool Hall Environment, including humidity control, air heating and air flow, along with design considerations, ducting and the importance of primary heat source and heat pump implications.
Barry Littlemore, from Dantherm, was unable to be present due to Covid issues in his family but ISPE Past-President Ben Studdy, FISPE, from Fairlocks Pool Products, kindly stepped in at the last minute and ran through Barry’s presentation, looking at how inverter heat pumps have changed the UK pool heat pump market, highlighting the differences between on/off and inverter heat pumps, technology, efficiency, sizing and installation considerations.
Will Dando, FISPE, gave tips and advice in his presentation on how to save energy and resources by choosing the correct pool cover. During the Seminar, Jimmy Lamb, FISPE, was inaugurated as the new ISPE President, taking the Chain of Office from outgoing President, Philip Barlow, FISPE.
NEW PRESIDENT
Jimmy’s first duty as President was to conduct the ISPE awards and he presented Philip Barlow with a Gold ISPE Lapel Badge signifying that Philip is now an ISPE Past-President. Jimmy went on to present Technician certificates to the newly qualified ISPE Technicians who had passed their ISPE exams in 2022.
The Gartside Cup is presented to the Student of the Year, the student who achieved the highest overall marks in their ISPE exams, and Jimmy presented the Gatside Cup to the winner, Heather Brigden-McLean from SCP UK. The Jim Johnson Filtration Shield for the best Filtration exam paper was won by Kieran MacDonald from Cheshire Wellness, although unfortunately Kieran was unable to be present. Jimmy announced that the Bob Kent (MSI) Cup for the best Heating exam paper had been won by Dave Bretherton from PPG UK & Ireland, and Jimmy presented Dave with the cup and congratulated him.
The final award of the day was for the Peter Horne Memorial Cup for the best chemicals exam paper and the winner was announced as Adam Hudson from Grayfox Pools who, unfortunately, was unable to be present. Jimmy said that Adam had scored an amazing 97% in his Chemicals Exam and congratulated Adam in his absence.
COUNCIL MEMBERS
Prior to Covid, the newly inaugurated ISPE President would Chair the Institute’s AGM as part of the October Seminar but with the AGM moving on-line via Web-Ex in recent years, it was decided to hold the 2022 AGM via Web-Ex too, two days after Jimmy’s inauguration, on 20th October 2022.
All eligible members were notified in the usual way. Three ISPE Members had been nominated to serve on the ISPE Council of Management, Colin Jenkinson, MISPE, from Leisure Safety Training, Shaun Keay, MISPE from LKS Pools, and Alex Kemsley, MISPE, from Waterstream, and they were duly elected, along with the retiring Council members eligible for re-election, Colin Day, FISPE, Malcolm Sharp, Hon.FISPE and Ben Studdy, FISPE.
THE ISPE FILTRATION WORKSHOP
The recent ISPE Filtration workshop was fully booked and took place on 8th November at Plastipack’s premises, in St. Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, courtesy of Peter Adlington, FISPE. The ISPE Filtration Workshop is extremely popular and is for a maximum of 16 The workshop is run by ISPE Fellows, Chris Carr and Philip Barlow assisted by Kim Mumford, MISPE, and gives basic training and guidance to new recruits and/or service personnel with limited experience of swimming pool filtration and servicing.

BACK-TO-BASICS
The next Revision seminar, which is open to all for a small charge (but free to ISPE students), will be held on Tuesday 21st February 2023, in Cobham, Surrey.
This seminar has proved to be an excellent refresher for those about to sit their ISPE exams and features the four ISPE Tutors looking at past exam questions and seeing where marks may be won or lost. Please register your interest now with the ISPE office.
