Yorkshire’s brand new leisure centre was officially opened last month, following the completion of the £7 million project.
Selby Leisure Centre features a six lane 25m swimming pool, a separate training pool and spa area, plus a gym, exercise studios and changing facilities. Olympian Rebecca Adlington OBE officially marked the completion of the project as part of a Civic Ceremony, in which she delivered sessions for young swimmers and unveiled a commemorative plaque.
Cllr Gillian Ivey, deputy leader of Selby District Council, said: “The new leisure centre is a fantastic addition to Selby and residents should be really proud to have such a first rate facility on their doorstep.”
Managed by leisure operator WLCT, the new centre replaces the former Abbey Leisure Centre, which was destroyed by fire in February 2013. Barr + Wray completed the design, supply and installation of the 25m competition and training pools, filtration and treatment systems and tiling works.
Andy Wiggans, chair of WLCT said “We’re really excited to be managing this state-of-the-art facility, which will provide quality leisure services for the people of this wonderful town. “With the Tour de Yorkshire heading here in May, Selby is well and truly on the sporting map.”
