For those who cherish Britain’s rich aquatic heritage, Historic Pools of Britain (HPB) offers a rewarding way to discover some of the country’s most remarkable swimming spaces. We find out more about how to get involved and get behind HPB.
Individual membership of HPB is more than a show of support – it’s an invitation to be part of the organisation, meet like-minded enthusiasts, go behind the scenes and immerse yourself in these treasured settings.
From grand Edwardian bathhouses to stunning Art Deco lidos, these sites reflect generations of civic pride, and it’s this same community spirit that has driven Historic Pools of Britain. By becoming a member, you are actively contributing to preserving this legacy while gaining access to a unique programme of experiences.
This summer, the HPB will host a celebratory event for the 90th anniversary of Peterborough Lido.
This Grade II listed beauty, complete with sundecks and iconic clock tower, opened in 1936 and has weathered wartime damage, financial challenges and periods of uncertainty, yet continues to thrive thanks to dedicated local support.
As well as 90 years of history to uncover, the event will be a treat for lido lovers, featuring a talk by Tom Fort, author of the new book Lido Land, plus Emma Pusill and Janet Wilkinson, co-authors of The Lido Guide. The day will round off with a guided tour and swim. As an individual member, you can enjoy two complimentary events held at a historic pool each year (£60 for non-members). And while there is still time to secure a place at this celebration as part of your membership, a free swim at Peterborough Lido is also included as an additional member benefit.
This year’s individual membership package offers a range of experiences across the UK. Vouchers include a free swim at Bramley Baths in Leeds; a free swim and more at Pells Pool in Lewes; a free Turkish Baths session and additional benefits at The City Baths in Newcastle; two free guided tours with a special deal on cream teas at Victoria Baths in Manchester; and two complimentary day passes to The Western Baths Club in Glasgow.
These experiences give members the chance not only to visit these remarkable places, but to enjoy what makes them so special. Through your membership, you are helping HPB to support this extraordinary part of the nation’s living heritage.
