For years, the UK pool industry has followed a predictable pattern.
While our European neighbours — particularly in France — perfected the high-performance liner pool as the gold standard, the UK trade remained largely anchored to traditional tiled builds.
In France, Europe’s largest pool market, over 80% of new builds are liner- based. In contrast, the UK has remained static with many installers viewing liners as a secondary option. That could be about to change.
Ocea UK and their sister company DEL are bringing a level of European manufacturing clout that hasn’t been seen in the UK for decades. The dream team are offering a high-tech, high-speed alternative to the slow, labour-intensive tiled build. While others may claim expertise, DEL has the history to back it up. The statistics speak for themselves with between 8,000 and 10,000 bespoke liners being produced annually. DEL has invested heavily in robotic precision. While many UK manufacturers still rely on manual cutting and traditional welding, DEL utilises automated high-frequency welding and laser-guided cutting tables. This robotic accuracy eliminates the ‘human error’ variable meaning that DEL liners are supplied with a ‘First-Time Fit’ guarantee:
“For the UK trade, this means no more ‘making it fit’ on-site,” says Alan. “The liner arrives as a perfect ‘second skin’ every single time.”
On the back of Covid and Brexit, the UK market has experienced one of its most disrupted periods since the 1970s with the UK liner supply chain vulnerable to economic pressures. Good liner fitting remains highly specialised and the UK installer base is getting older and more hard to find — let alone book.
Liner backorders can get caught up in six to12 week delays with uncertainty about delivery dates. More complex printed liners still experience occasional long lead times because production runs are concentrated among relatively few European suppliers with prices much higher than pre-pandemic levels.
The market remains highly seasonal with orders spiking between February and July and bottlenecks in production occurring every spring resulting in installers having to book months ahead.
Meanwhile, on-site welded reinforced PVC systems are gaining share in:
• luxury pools
• commercial refurbishments
• irregular pool shapes
Drawing from the cutting-edge R&D of the CF France laboratories, the DEL range offers technical specifications that put the traditional supplier competition on the back foot.
“Speed is the new currency because we are able to offer lead times and reliability,” Thorne enthuses.
“The biggest pain for the UK trade is the ‘peak season bottleneck. When UK manufacturers hit capacity, lead times blow out and projects stall,” he adds. Historically, concrete/tiled is the preferred choice for 60 per cent of the high-end residential sector. This, say Ocea, has led to a “static” manufacturing base that hasn’t needed to innovate at scale. High-end liners, 1.5mm reinforced, are the primary choice for luxury builds across France and Germany due to speed, leak prevention, and thermal efficiency.
“We aren’t just selling liners; we are selling predictability,” Thorne emphasises. “By leveraging European volume, Ocea UK can maintain competitive lead times even during the height of the British summer, allowing installers to complete more projects and increase their annual turnover.”
The entry of Ocea UK and DEL into the UK market represents the first time in years that a genuine European heavyweight has challenged the ‘static’ status quo.
By combining the volume of a 10,000-unit factory with the technical USPs of CF France, Ocea is giving British builders the tools and the incentives to move away from the headaches of tiling and toward the precision of the modern liner pool.
