A man of action who would be the first to roll up his sleeves – or trouser legs if necessary – to get the job done, John Asher, a simply remarkable man, died at the end of April this year, shortly after celebrating his 90th birthday.
John and his wife, Brenda, founded Asher Swimming Pools, now based in Fulbeck, Lincolnshire, in 1968. Even though John retired a few years ago, the company successfully continues today under the guidance of daughter and son, Claire and Andrew Asher with the support of John Epton.
“Nearly 60 years of continuous trading is almost a record achievement within our industry and is a testament to the hard work and solid foundations set in place by John from the outset,” said ISPE Company Secretary, Chris Carr.
Over the years, John served as both SPATA and I.S.P.E. President as well as the Institute’s Honorary Treasurer. Crucially, he provided practical and enthusiastic support for the industry’s SPATEX trade event.
“A simply brilliant chap, a generous, hardworking, family man, and friend to so many,” Chris adds. “Many of us in the pool industry will also remember John’s great sense of humour and his many practical jokes.”.
Outside of the pool industry, John was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Grantham Kesteven. Rotary prides itself on Service Before Self – something that John epitomised. He looked after the welfare of Rotary Club members visiting them and ensuring they had everything that they needed to help them get better quickly. John founded Trade Aid 21 years ago in 2005 in response to the Asian tsunami of 2004 and his experiences at an African training facility.
Trade Aid provides a Business in a Box. Each Box contains everything that the individual needs to establish themselves in business. Boxes exist for Builder, Carpenter, Blacksmith, Mechanic, Tailor/Seamstress, Teacher, Handyman and Electrician. Trade Aid also works with Shelter Box, Sightsavers and Physionet, and e still sends at least 20 Boxes each year which are given to newly qualified trainees.
As a result of his endeavours, Rotary International awarded John a Presidential Citation and a five sapphire Paul Harris Fellowship in 2011. In 2014 Rotary also awarded him a Service Above Self Award, the highest award possible.
John was indeed, an exceptional individual, who devoted his life to helping others. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing him.
