The 136th One Day Seminar from The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) brought together swimming pool industry professionals for a day of technical learning, discussion, and networking at Orida Hotels, Newbury.
The event welcomed engineers, contractors, suppliers, and industry specialists from across the sector, providing an opportunity to share knowledge and discuss the latest developments affecting the swimming pool industry.
Opening the seminar, ISPE President Bob Judd FISPE welcomed delegates before introducing a programme designed to address a range of technical and operational topics relevant to modern pool design, maintenance, and plant management.
The morning sessions began with Amanda Thompson-Smith MISPE of AstralPool UK, who explored the growing use of modular pool systems.
Her presentation highlighted the flexibility and efficiency these systems can offer across domestic, commercial, and swim school environments, particularly where installation speed and adaptability are key considerations. Renzo Hoebe from Variopool discussed specification considerations for multifunctional pools, focusing on how modern pool spaces are increasingly required to accommodate multiple user groups and activities within a single facility.
Energy efficiency and sustainable operation remained a key theme throughout the day. Ron O’Sullivan MISPE of Heatstar delivered a detailed session on the sizing and commissioning of heat pumps for swimming pool applications, outlining best practice approaches to maximise performance and long-term operational efficiency.
Following the networking break, Dan Phillips MISPE from Lighthouse Pools examined the role of swimming pool covers and why they remain an essential consideration for energy retention, water management, and operational efficiency.
The technical programme continued with Duncan Ockendon MISPE from Aquaservice AS discussing the use of HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) within swimming pool plant equipment and the advantages the material can offer in durability and long-term system performance. Following a sociable lunch, Will Dando FISPE of Plastica Pools explored the benefits of ABS pipework for swimming pool systems, comparing its durability and performance characteristics against PVC solutions.
The final presentation of the day came from Jimmy Lamb FISPE of Dryden Aqua, who focused on sulphates and turbidity, including monitoring methods, water quality implications, and practical control strategies for operators and engineers.
Alongside the presentations, delegates had opportunities throughout the day to network with peers, speakers, and exhibitors. ISPE extends thanks to seminar sponsors Lighthouse Pools, Complete Pool Controls Ltd, Lovibond®, and Aquaservice for their support of the event.
Planning is already underway for ISPE’s 2026/27 events programme, which will include further seminars, technical workshops, and industry networking opportunities aimed at supporting ongoing professional development across the sector.
